Federal grant will benefit community center

The bulk of the $441,488 in federal community development block grant (CDBG) funds Dalton has been given this year will go to rebuild the Dalton Community Center on Fredrick Street under a plan approved by the City Council Monday night.

Council members voted 3-0 to approve the plan, which now goes to the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. Mayor David Pennington votes only in the event of a tie.

The community center project will get $260,000 in CDBG money. The project is expected to cost $4.3 million and will also be funded by bonds and from the recreation department’s reserve.

“This is about more than recreation. This project will help redevelop that entire neighborhood,” said Pennington.

The plan also funds, among other items, the following projects:

• Family Support Council, bathroom and file room renovations

• Dalton-Whitfield Senior Center, roof replacement

• Action Ministries, transitional housing

• Dalton-Whitfield Community Development Corp., housing counseling management program

• Family Promise, case management for homeless families

• Northwest Georgia Family Crisis Center, residential assistance

• Whitfield County-Dalton Day Care Center, tuition assistance program

The council also voted 3-0 to:

• Create a Dalton-Whitfield Board of Zoning Appeals and a Dalton-Whitfield Board of Building Appeals with Whitfield County. The city and the county have already merged zoning and building code enforcement.

• Approve a loan agreement, not to exceed $16,248, with Anita Williams under the federal Community Home Investment Program (CHIP) to pay for renovations to bring her home up to building code standards.

The council also recognized May 15 as Poppy Day, May 9-16 as National Police Week and May as Better Hearing and Speech Month.

And the council recognized former member Charlie Bethel for his service to the city. Bethel is running for the state Legislature. Gary Crews, who was the only person to qualify for a special election to replace Bethel, will be sworn in at the council’s next meeting on May 17.
