Murray school board candidates prepping for runoff

DALTON — CHATSWORTH — School board hopefuls Jackie Rogers and Anthony Tankersley will be the only local candidates vying for political office when Murray County voters return to the polls for the Aug. 10 runoff election.

Rogers led with 670 tallies for the District 7 at large seat in the Republican primary on July 20. Tankersley was second with 445 votes. Dale Blankenship, who actually dropped out of the race in late June, was still on the ballot and garnered 363 votes. Kevin Henry trailed with 359.  The winner of the District 7 race will face Democrat Sam Bright in November.

For the District 6 school board seat, newcomer Brenda Sandlin topped sitting board member Timothy Dover with 972 votes to 898. No Democrats qualified for that seat.

Both Rogers and Tankersley say they’re making themselves seen and heard.

“I’ve put out a few more signs,” Rogers said. “I see or try to see quite a few folks on a daily basis at the office, at churches and things like where I’ve run into some folks. I don’t do any campaigning in churches but, you know, just running into folks out in the community. The only other thing I’m considering is running some type of political ad in the newspaper.”

Rogers has worked as a CPA for more than 20 years and is the self-employed, sole practitioner of Jackie L. Rogers, CPA, in Chatsworth. He was asked if he was seeking any of the more than 700 votes that Blankenship or Henry pulled in the primary.

“I haven’t spoken to either one of them (since the primary),” he replied. “I spoke to Mr. Henry at one of the political forums before the election. (The voters) are knowledgeable enough that they’re going to be able to look at both candidates to make their decision.

“I haven’t spoken to Mr. Tankersley either, but I’ve heard several good things about him. The voters will be informed enough to make that decision between him and me.”

Tankersley said he wanted to “first of all” thank all the voters who voted for him.

“Second of all, what I’m doing on the campaign is I’m getting out and talking to a lot more people, discussing the issues that we have, seeing the citizens of Murray County’s concerns,” he said.

In his comments immediately after the primary, he said he had “no set agenda.”

“I don’t go into this knowing everything that needs to be fixed,” Tankersley said.
