Deputies with the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office have charged a man they said led them on a chase after trying to steal a motorcycle, and they’ve also charged a resident who shot off a firearm while they were in pursuit.
Maj. John Gibson said officers were chasing the alleged motorcycle thief on Maple Grove Road at about 10 p.m. Monday when the motorcyclist wrecked and ran away. He said the man apparently tried to steal another motorcycle, and officers were chasing him through the woods. A resident in the area for some reason discharged a firearm while the chase was going on. The resident was charged with reckless conduct, and the alleged thief was taken into custody.
Gibson said no one was shot in the incident.
The names of the two people charged were not immediately available.
