Brittany Pittman, a Republican candidate for Murray County sole commissioner, filed a report on Monday with the Chatsworth police department claiming identity theft after learning of a mailing that states she voted for Democrat Barack Obama, now the president, in a primary in 2008.
The mailing, ostensibly targeting Democrats, says that Pittman, who faces current sole commissioner Greg Hogan in the July 31 GOP primary, “has been forced to run as a Republican to have a chance at being elected. This year please consider ‘holding your nose’ and vote in the Republican primary July 31.”
It continues, “In 2008 she voted in the Democrat presidential primary for President Obama! Let’s give her our support.” There is a representation of a red-white-and-blue donkey, the traditional symbol of the Democratic Party.
Pittman’s campaign called the mailing “unethical” and a “fraud and an attempt to hurt (her) in her bid” for sole commissioner.
Pittman herself said, “First, I was not ‘forced’ to run as a Republican. I have been a registered Republican in this county for several elections and primaries . I have much more respect for Murray County voters than to ask them to ‘hold their noses’ while casting their vote on July 31.”
She added, “Although I respect the Democratic Party, I did not vote for Obama in 2008.”
According to Pittman’s campaign, the mailing shows no return address, but does list an organization by the name of “Murray County Progressive Coalition.” Her campaign said, “Efforts are being made to contact this organization to clear this matter up, but no records of the organization have been found. The Committee to Elect Brittany Pittman asks anyone with affiliations with this coalition to please email pittmanforcommissioner@gmail.com so this issue can be resolved.”
The Chatsworth Police Department on its Facebook page included the following: “Murray County commissioner candidate Brittany Pittman filed a police report concerning fraudulent postcards sent through the mail to several Murray County residents. These postcards featured Pittman’s photograph and information leading recipients to believe the postcards were from her.
“If you receive mailers from any political candidate, look over the information and if you have questions, contact the candidate’s political party headquarters for verification. Using identifying information about a person without his/her consent is identity fraud.”
