Timothy Shawn Cowan is in the Murray County jail on $10,000 bond after officials said four law enforcement agencies chased him from Spring Place to Dalton where he finally wrecked the stolen motorcycle he was driving.
Murray sheriff’s officer Capt. Jody Webb wrote in his incident report that Cowan said he was running because “he did not want to go to jail.” He said the chase of the 41-year-old Centerville, Ga., man began when Webb saw him stopped on a motorcycle at Ga. Highway 225 and Ga. Highway 52 Alternate at about 2 a.m. Thursday.
“The motorcycle (rider) was acting suspicious by refusing to pull away from the stop sign,” Webb writes in his report. “When the motorcycle finally pulled away, it did so at a high rate of speed.”
He said he turned on his blue lights and siren, but Cowan wouldn’t pull over and was running red lights and stop signs, so he contacted the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office, which joined the chase after Cowan crossed the county line. The Georgia State Patrol joined in when Cowan turned onto Airport Road, according to the report, and the Dalton Police Department became involved when he entered the city limits.
“The driver of the motorcycle attempted to make a left turn onto Fifth Avenue (in Dalton), but lost control and hit the curb, causing the motorcycle to fall over on to its side,” the report states. “The driver then attempted to pick the motorcycle up and try to flee. The motorcycle’s foot peg had gotten wedged under (the state patrol trooper’s) push bumper, and the subject was unable to get the motorcycle.”
The report states Cowan then tried to run away on foot, but Webb and the other officers caught him, discovering that the Chatsworth Police Department had reported the motorcycle stolen.
The report states Cowan, of 102 N. Hampshire Lane in Centerville, had a driver’s license out of North Carolina that was suspended. He was charged Thursday by the Murray County Sheriff’s Office with obstruction of an officer, theft by receiving stolen property stolen out of state, driving while license suspended or revoked, reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and driving on the wrong side of the road.
“I asked ... (Cowan) why he was running, and he stated he did not want to go to jail,” Webb said.
