The Dalton City Council voted 3-0 on Monday to award a $5,600 contract to Carlson-Jones Architects for renovations at the Dalton-Whitfield Senior Center.
Mayor David Pennington was absent, and Mayor Pro Tem Dick Lowrey presided over the meeting and didn’t vote.
City officials plan a major overhaul of the center, including new kitchen equipment, flooring and cabinets, as well as bathroom renovations and new painting for the walls.
The senior center is jointly funded by Dalton and Whitfield County, but it is managed by the city recreation department. All of the funding will come from a federal community development block grant. The cost of the renovation will be determined once bids are received.
Council members also voted 3-0 to approve an amendment to the 2012 budget that, among other things, includes $39,960 for demolition of the old City Park School building, which has already happened, and removal of asbestos from the Crescent City train car. The train car is located next to the old freight depot downtown.
Council members also recognized Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week and Sept. 25 as National Voter Registration Day.
