Superior Court judges hope to pick new Murray magistrate quickly

Conasauga Superior Court judges will appoint a new chief magistrate for Murray County “as soon as possible” Chief Superior Court Judge William Boyett said.

The deadline for applications for that post was Friday at 5 p.m., and earlier that afternoon, Boyett said they had received “a number” of applications but he did not know exactly how many.

State law requires the four judges to appoint a replacement for former Chief Magistrate Bryant Cochran, who resigned his post after eight years in August, admitting that he pre-signed warrants. The Georgia Judicial Qualifications Commission was investigating those allegations along with charges he made inappropriate sexual advances toward 36-year-old Angela Garmley of Chatsworth.

Cochran’s term would have expired Dec. 31, but voters in the July 31 primary elected him to another four years. Because of that, the person the judges name chief magistrate will serve until Jan. 1, 2015, after the next county election cycle.

“We have to see who has applied. We’ll have to do some background checks, and we’ll want to interview some of those folks. I don’t know how long that will take,” Boyett said.
