The Whitfield County Health Department, along with the city of Atlanta and the Atlanta Metro area, was recognized last month as a state leader in providing oral health care.
County Nurse Manager Gayle Brannon briefed health department board members Thursday on the Georgia Oral Health Summit held in Macon in August. She said the health department’s health clinic leads the state in treating HIV patients covered by the federal Ryan White CARE Act. She also said that information provided at the conference showed that 23 of Georgia’s 159 counties have no dentist and another 17 have just one dentist.
“Oral health care has long been a priority for our county. Our dental clinic gets no state or federal funds,” she said.
Brannon said funding for the dental clinic, which serves children and adults, comes from the general funding for the health department provided by the county as well as any insurance or Medicaid coverage patients have.
The dental clinic served 1,448 patients in the quarter ending in July compared to 1,463 in the same quarter in 2011.
“We believe that without furlough days we would have equaled or exceeded the numbers from 2011,” she said.
In addition to providing dental care, the clinic provides expecting mothers with information and education to help get their children off on a path to good dental health.
The Whitfield County Health Department is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
