A man on a bicycle looking for work in the Airport Road area on Wednesday was hit by a car but had only minor injuries. The collision happened around 2:15 p.m.
Brian Lee Yerty, 24, who lives between the Dawnville and Pleasant Grove communities, was traveling west with his brother-in-law, David Cochran, on their Schwinn Cruisers when they stopped at the entrance to Zaxby’s Restaurant to allow a car to exit, Cochran said. A woman driving a Chevy S-10 Blazer was leaving the eatery.
“She had stopped and looked both ways before pulling out into the road, but I don’t think she saw us,” said Cochran. “Brian was in front of me and when he saw her stop, he went ahead because he thought she had stopped for us. She pulled out when he got into the driveway and it knocked him into the street.”
Yerty was taken to Hamilton Medical Center by ambulance. After his release, he was asked how he was feeling.
“Not too good right now,” he replied. “I’m cut up a little bit, and it took some skin off my ankle.”
His wife, Sherry, said they have been struggling.
“He’s been looking for a job for months, ever since his unemployment ran out,” she said. “We’ve had to move in with my mother-in-law.”
Brian Yerty said he’s “been everywhere” trying to find work.
“I’ve gone around and now I’m going back around to follow up, I’m telling you,” he said. “We didn’t have any gas in the car, so for the last month or two we’ve been looking on bikes.”
He said he and Cochran rode their bicycles from Dawnville Road several miles to the east side of town.
Officer Steve Zahn of the Dalton Police Department’s traffic enforcement unit said no charges will be filed against the driver or cyclist.
