Moore, Rogers, Sandlin win BOE seats in Murray

CHATSWORTH — Republicans J. Robbie Moore and Jackie Rogers won seats on the Murray Board of Education on Tuesday in contested races.

With all precincts reporting, unofficial results showed Moore, a biblical and theological studies major at Regent University online with no relatives in the school system, with 3,611 votes (62.67 percent) to Democrat Ronnie Leonard’s 2,143 votes (37.19 percent) in the District 5 race. Incumbent Elizabeth Gould opted not to run for re-election.

“I’m very overwhelmed,” Moore said. “I didn’t want to have my hopes up too much this evening.”

Leonard, an employee of Mactec Engineering, said he wasn’t sure if his wife being employed as a teacher in the school district helped swing the race in Moore’s favor or whether he might have had more success had he run as a Republican.

“I congratulate Mr. Moore and hope he does a good job,” said Leonard, who during the campaign touted his ability to be a good listener. “I was wanting to do a good job, and I hope he does, too.”

In the District 7 at-large race, Rogers, an accountant in Chatsworth, garnered 4,314 votes (75.39 percent) while Democrat Kenneth “Sam” Bright received 1,400 votes (24.47 percent). Incumbent Josh Young did not run for re-election.

“I am both honored and humbled by the encouragement and support of the community,” Rogers said.

Bright, a service technician for Southtel Communications, had talked about the need to cut wasteful spending and offer more technical and vocational education for students.

Bright congratulated Rogers and thanked those who voted for him.

Moore and Rogers will take office in January. Both said they were unsure whether any specific issues swayed the election in their favor, but Moore noted that several people have thanked him for his vow to take a stronger stand against bullying. During the campaign Rogers often spoke of the need for transparency in the school district and for board members to be open about sharing information with the public.

Brenda Sandlin, a Republican and tea party activist, won the District 6 race in the July GOP primary against incumbent Tim Dover and was unopposed on Tuesday.

Turnout in Murray County was 31.04 percent, or 5,975 of 19,249 registered voters.

“That’s a terrible turnout,” said registrar Larry Sampson. “People are tired.”
