School official: Students saw shotgun on bus

Students on a bus from Mountain Creek Academy to Bagley Middle School saw a 16-year-old MCA student with a shotgun on Tuesday and notified the bus monitor, a school official said Thursday.

Charges have not been filed against the student, said Mike Tuck, Murray County Schools’ administrative services director, but Georgia law requires a mandatory one-year suspension for any student carrying a loaded weapon on school grounds. Sheriff Howard Ensley said on Tuesday the student had a loaded, 12-gauge, sawed-off shotgun and some extra ammunition.

“He never threatened anybody or wielded the weapon,” said Tuck. “However, there’s no knowing what was in his mind and an official reason for his actions has not been released. All I know is that it could have been disastrous if it hadn’t been for the quick, calm and professional response from officials.”

Tuck said the 16-year-old student boarded an “express” bus — which takes students to and from Mountain Creek Academy and Bagley — around 2:50 p.m. on Tuesday. The bus took the student, along with a small group of MCA students, to Bagley. Tuck said that around 3 p.m. the student got off the express bus and boarded a regular bus with four other students, hiding the shotgun in his pants.

Several students on the express bus saw the weapon and told the bus monitor, who called the Mountain Creek Academy secretary, Tuck said. The information was relayed to the school resource officer, who notified the sheriff’s office. Deputies were sent to Bagley and boarded the regular bus. The student was apprehended without incident or resistance, he said.

“He had the gun hidden in his pants when they (deputies) confronted him, and they disarmed him at that point,” Ensley said.

School officials placed North Murray High School and Bagley Middle School on lock down Tuesday afternoon until the situation was resolved.

“We don’t know what his plans were, but he was on the bus going home and had not been reported during the day as having it,” Ensley said. “All the children are safe because of the fast thinking and good work of the deputies that disarmed him.”
