A 16-year-old Mountain Creek Academy student is in custody after officials said he took a loaded, 12-gauge, sawed-off shotgun onto a school bus on Tuesday and tried to conceal it in his pants.
Murray County Sheriff Howard Ensley said someone apparently tipped off a school resource officer there was a student on the bus thought to have a gun on him. Deputies responded and got the other children off the bus, Ensley said.
“He had the gun hidden in his pants when they confronted him, and they disarmed him at that point,” Ensley said.
He said the student did not put up a fight, and no one was injured. North Murray High School and Bagley Middle School were on lockdown for a while Tuesday afternoon as the incident was going on, but school officials declined to provide information about the incident. Ensley said he wasn’t aware of the boy making any threats to use the gun on anyone, but he said he did have extra ammunition on him.
“We don’t know what his plans were, but he was on the bus going home and had not been reported during the day as having it,” he said. “All the children are safe because of the fast thinking and good work of the deputies that disarmed him.”
