The Family Support Council received a surprise visitor at their office one afternoon.
It wasn’t a family in need but a car load with a $1,000 food order for their clients including baby cereal, canned pears, peaches, applesauce and diapers among other items to help young children enjoy a healthy meal and other essential daily items. This surprise came from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which answers cries of help throughout the world in humanitarian aid. The Family Support Council was chosen by a group of men in the local congregation in Dalton.
When asked about the donation, First Steps program manager Rita Wagers said, “All the food and items were immediately used by new families with babies and small children.”
The Family Support Council offers a variety of programs to the community including First Steps where trained volunteers visit new mothers at Hamilton Medical Center to offer support, educational materials and community resource lists. Healthy Families is an educational and support service for first-time parents and parents-to-be up through their child’s fourth birthday. The Child Abuse Council and Parent Education programs are among other services offered.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints conducts humanitarian activities worldwide. From 1985 to 2008, humanitarian services provided more than $1.11 billion in total assistance to needy individuals in 167 countries.
Contributions to the Family Support Council are tax-deductible. Donations, bequests and memorial gifts enable the agency to continue offering affordable, comprehensive services to children and families.
