Letter: Local tea party call for partisan elections curious

I find it ironic that the local tea party is upset about the possibility of having nonpartisan school board elections in Murray County.

To begin with, political parties didn’t exist in the early years of our republic because the founders didn’t see them as being necessary, which is why there’s no mentioning of them in the Constitution. They evolved in the early 19th century merely as a way that candidates could differentiate their views from those of their opponents. They became ingrained in the psyche of the body politic, but in reality are nothing more than a convenient vehicle for getting elected, and are required, in all but a handful of states, to get on the ballot.

The tea party itself would actually not meet the definition of a political party in some circles but would be thought of mainly as a disgruntled splinter group operating within the framework of the existing Republican Party organization.
