Letter: What Kelly taught me

Perhaps you’ve heard the saying “A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.” In a world of darkness, it seems only natural that everyone would choose to be near that light and to pass it on to others. My world, like countless others, has been made brighter by a wonderful woman, Kelly Bock. Her time in this world has been cut short, but her light will shine on in all of us who were blessed to have known her.

What Kelly taught me:

Take time to make someone feel special and show them appreciation. “Thank you” notes and homemade cards might take “time,” but that’s the point. Take time. Time is precious.

Don’t wait for the “perfect time” or the “perfect body.” Life is made up of the little things, and the memories we have made won’t be based on what we were wearing, what our hair looked like that day or what we weighed. Time is precious.

And most of all, love deeply. You don’t get a second chance at raising your kids. Love them now. Slow down and enjoy friends and family, because time is precious.

Kelly’s life was as much a lesson in time as was her death. Over the years, she taught me many things, and I never realized until her time was running out that time was the most important lesson.

Although it is hard to imagine a world without Kelly, I realize that, for all of us who knew her, there will never be a world without Kelly. A part of her shines on through each of us.
