Letter: Thanksgiving and Eid-ul-Azha: A young Muslim girl’s perspective

Every year of my life since kindergarten, when the fall colors come into play and the weather chills, I have been asked the same question. What am I thankful for? And I always gave the same answer: family, friends, food, my home, etc.

But now as I have grown older, I have come to realize that I need to be thankful to God not only for these material items of this world, but for making me who I am today, and for blessing me with my faith and all of the things I have today.

As a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, I am going to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha, a holiday, in the coming weeks. We celebrate Eid-ul-Azha in remembrance of the sacrifice that we believe Prophet Abraham made because of his faith and trust in God. I see Thanksgiving as an opportunity to remember all of the sacrifices those around me have made for me.

We also celebrate Eid-ul-Azha in honor of the end of Hajj, which is the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. This pilgrimage requires a person to leave their home and be separated from friends and relatives, all for the sake of God.

So this coming Thanksgiving I would like to challenge not only Muslims but people of all faiths to ask themselves the question, “What am I thankful for?” and perhaps uncover a new answer.
