On Dec. 6 I was shopping with two of my children at the Walmart on Shugart Road when my purse was stolen out of my buggy. I spoke with a customer service manager. He put me in touch with security and the search began. He began going over the security tapes and I was directed to the service desk where another associate helped me call the police department so they could take my report.
I was hysterical … everything I owned was in my purse. Because I was upset, my children were upset also, and Shannon, an assistant manager, brought my children a bottle of water to help calm them down.
Officer James Goines from the Dalton Police Department took my statement. I was told the people who had stolen my purse had already left the store with the purse. As we were leaving, my daughter Hope said, “Momma, we need a Christmas miracle, don’t we?” I told her we did, but I wasn’t counting on it.
After my husband brought keys to my vehicle, straight home I went to start contacting credit card companies. My oldest daughter Whitney and I started calling and it had to be by God’s grace that I contacted Discover first. I was told that my card had already been used and where and what time the transactions had taken place. Whitney contacted the police department and notified them.
Hours later I received a call from Officer Goines. He told me he had my purse, wallet and all the contents of my purse and that the people accused of stealing it had been taken into custody. Little did I know that my purse had been thrown out on the side of the road and Sgt. Matthew Locke had searched for it in the dark and pouring rain just so I could get everything back.
I broke down and cried because I never thought it would happen. I hadn’t had the faith that my little 9-year-old daughter had that we would indeed have a Christmas miracle.
This miracle would have never taken place without the dedication and perseverance of everyone involved. I would like to publicly thank the employees at Walmart — Richard Crooke, Will Henderson, Jeremy and Shannon, who stayed with me and my children and wasted no time in viewing the security tapes. This was instrumental in the police department locating my purse and stolen credit cards.
Most of all, I want to thank Officer James Goines, Sgt. Matthew Locke and Officer Chad Owen for going above and beyond their call of duty. Don’t let anyone tell you any different, heroes do exist and miracles do happen.
