Letter: Support groups can be a lifeline

As anyone could imagine, grief and sadness are normal after a stroke. Depending on how severe the stroke is, it can have an enormous impact on a person’s life and the families. People who used to lead independent lives before their stroke, and now rely on outside help, will have a lot of adjusting to do, both psychologically and in the practical aspects of their day-to-day lives.

One option to help people to regain more independence, and help families to adjust to the changes in their lives, is attending a support group where families will meet others in similar situations and learn from the experts. Suzanne Brown, clinical nurse leader for Hamilton Medical Center, has recently started a support group for persons with a stroke and their families and friends. The group meets at RossWoods Adult Day Services at 6 p.m. on the third Tuesday of every month.

It is important to note that support groups can be the lifeline between health and sickness. I am asking families to take that first step and join the new Stroke Support Group at RossWoods. For directions, please call (706) 270-9628.
