Letter: Bush’s blunder

George W. Bush committed the worst foreign policy blunder in the history of the United States by invading Iraq. There were no weapons of mass destruction, chemical or biological weapons, or al-Qaida. Lawrence Wright in his book “The Looming Tower,” page 335, says, “… there is no evidence that Iraq ever supplied al-Qaida with weapons or camps … .” Wright won a Pulitzer Prize for this book. George W. Bush signed an agreement with Iraq before he left office that our military would be out by 2012.

It doesn’t matter if we keep our military there 10, 20 or 30 years, Iraq will, in the long run,  revert to what it has been. And now that we have left, you know the Republicans are going to blame anything that goes wrong on President Obama. Bin Laden gained tremendous support throughout the Muslim world by saying Americans are crusaders and because of oil will never leave Muslim countries.

The two major religious sects, Shiites and Sunnis, have been in conflict since 632 C.E. By invading Iraq, we created a power vacuum that Iran will try to fill.

Saudi Arabia is Sunni, and it isn’t hard to see that Iraq will stay a battle ground between the sects. Now, Iran is trying to purify itself for the coming apocalypse in which they say Jesus will come back and convert all Christians to Islam.

As odious as Saddam Hussein might have been, he never killed an American in this country.  We lost 4,487 soldiers with more than 32,000 wounded and paid more then $800 billion during the war. George W. said we would pay for the war with Iraqi oil revenues. The check’s in the mail.

In Iraq, Bush helped establish a government that looked like a democracy, but would go for as long as nine months without meeting. Remember, when you give somebody a gift it is up to the recipient what he does with it. Iraq belongs to Iraq and is Muslim and could revert to Sharia law and become a theocracy just like Iran.

George W. Bush left an Iraq that is nothing less than a ticking time-bomb. Most Iraqis say they hate us and are glad we’re gone. George W. Bush made the deal to pull out by 2012.
