Letter: Stop SOPA

I would like to urge everyone to contact your elected officials and ask them to vote against the SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) bill. This bill is an abomination and a stench in the nostrils of true Americans. We have never condoned censorship in this country, and find it repugnant in the extreme.

This bill will do nothing to stop online piracy. They can find a way around it. It will only affect normally law-abiding Americans, and will be used to stifle free speech and expression, as guaranteed by the First Amendment.

In addition, this bill also bypasses due process, another constitutional guarantee that we hold so dear. There are already adequate laws to address online piracy, through the normal copyright infringement process.

If this bill passes, we should all vote against every sitting senator and representative in the next elections, and urge others to do likewise. This is a bad bill, and to support it constitutes a violation of the oath of office of all elected officials, re: “to support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America ...”

It’s time to stop the madness, and our current slide into totalitarianism. This is as good a place as any to start. We need to all become true defenders of freedom, and see to it that this bill dies a horrible death on the House floor, as it should.
