Letter: Paper chose wrong picture, words

DALTON —

I was very disappointed with the way the paper displayed the front page story Saturday of the basketball finals.

Why was it necessary to focus only on the negative aspects of the day. The large headline read, “Great year, bad ending” and the picture showed the girls in agony as they watched the last few seconds of the game.

Yes, we would have loved to bring home the first place trophy, but second place should not be seen as a dishonor. Having taught language arts for many years, I know the power of words.

A headline that said “Northwest places second in state” would have been so much better.  Also, why could you not have a picture of the girls receiving the second place trophy? These girls would have loved to cut out and saved the article about their trip to the basketball finals. However, I doubt that any of them will want this negative article for their scrapbooks.

Someone commented in our Sunday school class that we should be so proud of these girls.  They managed to bring a community together in this time of great turmoil. With Washington bickering, our military fighting, and the unemployed hurting, it was wonderful to see so many people forget their problems for a few hours to come support the team.

In spite of the weather and the distance, several hundred people traveled to watch an event that last occurred 20 years ago. Let us all celebrate this team’s accomplishments and tell these girls that they did a fantastic job.
