DALTON —
I am writing as the chair of the executive committee of the Dalton-Whitfield County Archway Partnership. You may not be aware of Archway, but it is a program from which local communities gain the wealth of faculty and student expertise of the University System of Georgia and those faculty and students gain practical experience outside of the classroom. The real world meets the classroom and local communities benefit. We are the most recent of eight communities in the state who have begun the process of community improvement with this outstanding asset of the University System of Georgia.
In this short period of time all of us on our executive committee have gained a greater appreciation for Dalton State College. Our community needs a strong local presence of the University System of Georgia. There is such promise for Dalton State College that does not need to be slowed by any further cuts to the University System of Georgia.
It is my understanding that further cuts to the budget of the University System of Georgia will also eliminate funding for the Archway Partnership. While I fully understand the economic constraints the state is under, I believe that the Archway Partnership is a valuable investment in our local community that must continue. Likewise, Dalton State College cannot afford any more loss of funding which would occur if the University System of Georgia budget is cut further.
Please consider these important connections between our local community and the University System of Georgia before removing additional funding. Please do not cut the budget of the University System of Georgia any further.
