Health district: Prepare for hurricanes now

Hurricane season 2010 is here, and with storms already churning in the Atlantic, it is time for North Georgia residents to prepare.

Hurricane season lasts from June through November and experts agree there is a good possibility of several major storms developing during this time, any one of which could impact Georgia. Even in this part of the state, we could experience severe winds, floods, lightning, tornadoes, downed trees and power outages.

Residents throughout the North Georgia Health District, including Cherokee, Fannin, Gilmer, Murray, Pickens and Whitfield counties, are encouraged to create a personal emergency preparedness plan that can be put into action should disaster strike. Georgia has been lucky when it comes to hurricanes these past few years but eventually that luck will run out.

When it does, will you be ready?

Hurricane preparedness highlights:

• Stock your home with emergency supplies that you and your family may need during the emergency period.

• Make sure you have at least a 3-5 day supply of nonperishable food and water.

• Include prescription medications, baby supplies and any additional items for special medical needs.

• Place an emergency kit in your car.

You can find more information on emergency plans and how to create your own personal ready kit at www.ready.ga.gov.
