It’s July in Georgia, so temperatures are expected to be roasting.
But this weekend, thermometers could approach the 100 degree mark. Just look at the forecasted highs for the next four days: 98 degrees today, 98 degrees on Saturday, 95 degrees on Sunday and 97 degrees on Monday. And what’s more, each day the heat index will be in the low to mid 100s. The heat index is how the human body feels, walking at a three to five mph pace, when the temperature and humidity are combined.
Nate Mayes, a forecaster with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Peachtree City, said this month’s temperatures fall in line with normal July weather. The NWS has issued a heat advisory for middle and east Georgia for today, but no such warning is in effect for Murray and Whitfield counties.
“We’re not setting any records right now,” Mayes said. “It’s been hotter, but it’s starting to run a little above normal.”
Throughout the weekend, there’s a 20 to 30 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms.
The National Weather Service has a web page (www.srh.noaa.gov/ffc/?n=heat2) devoted to dealing with extreme heat. Officials recommend putting off strenuous activities, or if they have to be done, rescheduling them to the coolest parts of the day. They also suggest drinking plenty of water or other non-alcoholic drinks, wearing lightweight clothing, spending more time in places with air conditioning and staying out of the sun.
