Breast cancer awareness topic for Wellspring luncheon

The Whitfield Healthcare Foundation invites all women in our community to the second Wellspring for Women luncheon program for 2009, entitled “Breast Cancer — Detect It, Treat It, Beat It!” on Thursday. The luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Dalton Golf and Country Club, 2000 Cleveland Highway.

“Everyone has been touched in some way by breast cancer — a family member, friend or co-worker,” said Sharon Love, foundation director.

“October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the foundation is committed to helping other women learn more about breast cancer awareness,” Love said.

According to the American Cancer Society, besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common diagnosed cancer among women in America and more than one in four cancers are breast cancer.

Debra Haney and Marla Henderson will share inspirational stories of their personal battle with breast cancer and local surgeon Eric R. Manahan of Southeastern Breast Care Specialists will share his expertise on the disease, including a review of the warning signs, importance of early detection, ways to lower the risk, and latest treatment options.

The luncheon is to honor breast cancer survivors, raise awareness about the disease, and to save lives. Cost is $30. Each registered guest will receive a gift bag including a voucher for $100 mammogram screening at Hamilton Diagnostics. Attendees may arrive early for an opportunity to purchase one of the unique centerpieces specially designed by local artist Debra Dunn.

Call the foundation office at (706( 272-6128 to register.
