CALHOUN — Nearly everyone will suffer from low back pain at some point in their lives.
With pain levels ranging from acute, or short-term, to chronic and/or progressive, low back pain can interfere with work, routine daily activities, or recreation. But it is treatable, according to Tom Peters, PT, director of Gordon Hospital’s Rehabilitation Services.
“Low back pain can sometimes be the result of trauma to the lower back or a disorder such as arthritis,” Peters explained. “Symptoms can range from muscle ache to shooting or stabbing pain, limited flexibility or range of motion, or an inability to tolerate daily activity.”
Men and women are equally affected by low back pain. It occurs most often between ages 30 and 50, due in part to the aging process but also as a result of sedentary life styles with too little exercise. Also, the risk of experiencing low back pain from disc disease or spinal degeneration increases with age.
The Gordon Hospital orthopedic physical therapists will explain some of the causes, prevention tips, as well as current treatment options available for low back pain at a free Dinner Seminar planned for Thursday, November 5, 2009.
“This seminar will benefit anyone who is suffering from pain in their lower back,” Peters said. “You do not have to live with pain because there are many treatment options available for all levels of pain.”
The seminar will be held in Gordon Hospital’s Conference Room E beginning at 6 p.m. While the dinner and seminar are free, registration is required by calling 706-879-4732.
