Beaulieu noted for fit-friendly efforts
Beaulieu of America has been recognized by the American Heart Association’s Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Program for promoting physical activity and health in the workplace. Nationwide, 820 companies have achieved this status.
“Beaulieu of America should be applauded,” said Dale Huffstetler, regional director of the American Heart Association. “They have made big strides in an area critical to our overall health, and they hold the distinct honor of being the first company recognized for their efforts by the American Heart Association in our area.”
A special advertising section in the Sept. 28 issue of Fortune magazine includes Beaulieu of America in a list of companies across the nation recognized as Start! Fit-Friendly. Beaulieu of America appears in the “Gold” section.
“The accomplishments of our employees are historic,” said Ralph Boe, president and CEO of Beaulieu of America. “They make healthy choices daily which affects their overall well-being. For our company to be the first in North Georgia to be recognized by the American Heart Association is significant. I am very proud of our employees and challenge everyone to get active, make healthy choices and be good examples for everyone in your community.”
Adult Americans spend the majority of their waking hours at work, many in sedentary careers — amplifying the risk for medical problems such as obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. Time constraints and job responsibilities are employees’ biggest obstacles to exercising. That’s why the Start! Fit-Friendly companies program encourages employers to allow employees to walk while at work and to offer employees ways to become healthier.
Start! Fit-Friendly companies have programs to encourage physical activity, nutrition and culture enhancements such as on-site walking routes, healthy food options in cafeterias and vending machines, annual employee health risk assessments and online tracking tools.
“Companies really have to be dedicated and make this a priority,” Huffstetler said. “The benefits can be healthier and more productive workers, and lower health care costs down the road.”
Studies suggest that implementing a work site physical activity program and promoting a culture of physical activity will help companies increase productivity, reduce absenteeism, lower turnover and reduce hard costs. Research shows that employers can save $16 for every $1 they spend on health and wellness.
“We are truly honored to receive this award,” said Phil Bates, vice president of organizational development for Beaulieu of America. “It celebrates the commitment and dedication of our team members to become healthier employees which benefits them at home and at work. When you’re healthier you’re happier. It’s a win-win for everyone involved. Our Beaulieu team continues to strive to make Dalton a healthier place to live.”
