CHATTANOOGA — The tenth annual Cam Busch Endowed Art for Health Lecture Series will be held Thursday, February 25, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Hunter Museum of American Art.
Guest lecturer, Dr. Ysaye Barnwell, sings with Sweet Honey in the Rock, an cappella group of six women who perform a wide range of music including spirituals, songs of the struggle for justice, the blues, and ancient lullabies. Dr. Barnwell has a doctorate in Speech Pathology and a master’s degree in Public Health, and she was a professor at the College of Dentistry at Howard University for 10 years. She has conducted workshops on three continents, written children’s books, and been a commissioned composer on numerous choral, film, video, dance, and theatrical projects.
“Music has such a powerful impact on health and spiritual well-being,” says Cam Busch, practicing art therapist from Chattanooga and national consultant on the arts in health care. “We are delighted to have Dr. Barnwell share from the wealth of her musical and multi-cultural gifts.”
The purpose of the lecture series is to acquaint the community with the importance of art in the healing process.
“Through this series we have had the privilege of hosting well-known artists, musicians, poets, performing artists and academics from around the country,” says Jennifer Nicely, chief development officer for Memorial Health Care System. “Each has brought his own unique message to help us better understand the role of the Arts in health care.”
Dr. Barnwell will discuss the legacy of African music and its role in healing, explain the missions of Sweet Honey, and teach the audience an interactive spiritual. She invites audiences to open their minds and hearts and think about who they are and how they treat people.
Program participants are invited to arrive early and explore the Hunter Museum’s newest temporary exhibition, “Themes of Identity.” The exhibit examines many concepts of identity—gender, race, class and nationalism—through the eyes of artists represented in the Museum's permanent collection.
Tickets are $25 per person, $15 for students. Tickets can be purchased at the evening of the event for $35, however we anticipate the event will sell out. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served and a cash bar offered. To purchase tickets, please call 423.495.4438 or visit www.memorial.org/foundation.
