CALHOUN —
To promote the health benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables, Gordon Hospital in Calhoun will host its first Farmers’ Market today.
According to Gordon Hospital Nutritionist Judy Fehlenberg, the market is open to the public and will be from 5 to 7 p.m. in the parking lot of the human resources building on Hospital Court.
“We will have several local farmers and gardeners on site selling a variety of produce at our first-ever market,” Fehlenberg says. “We hope that we will be able to host this market every Thursday and that it will only get bigger and better as the growing and harvest season continues.”
It’s only fitting that Gordon Hospital host a Farmers’ Market, Fehlenberg adds, due to the health benefits of fresh produce. In fact, the American Cancer Society recommends eating at least two-and-a-half cups of fruits and vegetables each day to help lower cancer risk.
“These foods contain important vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and antioxidants and are usually low in calories,” Fehlenberg explains. “In general, those with the most color — dark green, red, yellow and orange — have the most nutrients.”
While there will be a variety of fruits and vegetables, as well as fresh juices, local honey and other items for sale, Fehlenberg plans to pick a Cancer Fighter-of-the-Week to promote.
“Each week at the market we will provide some interesting information and recipes regarding the fruit or vegetable that we choose as our Cancer Fighter-of-the-Week,” she explained. “We also hope to have musical entertainment each week as well.”
All farmers and gardeners wishing to sell their produce at the market should contact Fehlenberg by calling (706) 602-7800, ext. 2074. There is no charge to participate.
