Hamilton receives positive mention in Consumer Reports magazine

DALTON — Hamilton Medical Center received a positive mention in an article on infection prevention in the March 2010 issue of Consumer Reports.

The story, titled “Deadly infections,” provides information on central line infections that some people get while in the hospital. The author said that some hospitals are doing an excellent job of protecting patients, while others are not.

The article mentions a simple, five-step checklist to prevent central line infections that was implemented by Peter Pronovost, MD, PhD, critical-care specialist at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore.

Hamilton uses the checklist, which includes proper procedures for washing hands, disinfecting the patient’s skin, using full-barrier precautions, placement of the catheter and removing unnecessary catheters.

“Our goal is to have no central-line infections,” said Kathy Dodd, RN, Hamilton Medical Center infection prevention specialist. “This checklist is another tool we use to make sure everyone is following the proper steps.”
