Lowery, Mansfield take third at senior tourney

— A pair of area golfers finished among the top half of the first flight Friday at the Georgia Senior Four-Ball Championship.

Cohutta’s David Mansfield and Dalton’s Ron Lowery teamed up to finish tied for third with three other teams at par 216 in the three-day, 54-hole Georgia State Golf Association tournament on the Peach State’s coast.

The championship flight played at The Golf Club at Sanctuary Cove in Waverly, while the first through fourth flights played at King and Prince Golf Course on St. Simons Island.

Mansfield and Lowery went 71-70-75 and shared third place with C.J. Dodd and Melvin Nichelson of Calhoun, John Williams and Ron Godwin of Marietta, and Charles Speakman and Tom Stewart of Columbus. Moultrie’s Donald Dale and Ernie Venet won with a 214 — they shot a 67 in the second round, the best 18-hole effort within the flight — to edge Suwanee’s Dave Barwick and Martinez’s Doug Faulkner by a stroke.

Dalton’s Chris Hall and Gary Cole were also in the first flight, going 76-84-79 to finish at 239.

Atlanta’s Mark Baxter and Bill Blalock shot a 195 to win the championship flight. For complete results, visit gsga.org.
