Dalton golfer starts tourney seeded third

Dalton’s David Noll Jr. now knows his first pairing in the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship at Johns Creek’s Rivermont Golf and Country Club.

Noll will face Atlanta’s Danny Whigham in the round of 32, with today’s tee time set for 9:18 a.m. Noll and Peachtree Corner’s Mike Cromer were the co-medalists of Thursday’s qualifying round, with each shooting a 3-under-par 67.

Noll is the No. 3 seed with Cromer at No. 2 and defending champion Brandon Nelson, of Roswell, at No. 1.

The course is playing to 7,112 yards and par 72 for the Georgia State Golf Association event, which is in its 94th year.

Noll — who won the Atlanta Amater Match Play Championship in 2005, 2008 and 2009 — is one of three players in the field who have won a GSGA tournament this year. He won the Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship in May at Duluth’s Berkeley Hills Country Club.

He was also the runner up at the Georgia Four-Ball Championship and Georgia Amateur Championship.
