A new professional tour is giving golfers from Northwest Georgia and Southeast Tennessee a playing option close to home.
John Powell, a former Dalton High golfer, beat Battlefield Golf Club pro Mike Miller on the first playoff hole Monday at Nob North Golf Course in Cohutta after both shot a 4-under-par 68. It was Powell’s second straight tournament win on the North Georgia Pro Golf Tour.
The tour was started by SouthEastern Golf Center owner Pete Webster of Ringgold and Rick Carpenter of Carpenter’s Auto Parts in Tunnel Hill. Players pay an entry fee into each tournament, and Webster said the top six places earn money, with all entry fees being paid back out. Tournaments are held once a month.
“We wanted to give the local players a chance to play together and compete at local courses rather than having to go down to Atlanta,” said Webster, who modeled the tour on the Open Golf Atlanta mini tour.
Powell won last month at Battlefield in Ringgold. The next tournament is in September at Bear Trace in Harrison, Tenn.
Justin Jolly was third with a 3-under 69, while Rudi Lee took fourth with a 70 and Gibby Gilbert III and Hudson Keener tied for fifth at 71.
With the two wins, Powell has won $1,100 on the tour. Gilbert is second on the money list at $400.
