GREENSBORO —
The Georgia Girls swept three of four matches and collected 10 points overall (in Nassau format) to jump out to an eight-point lead over their South Carolina counterparts in the opening round of the fifth annual Georgia-South Carolina Girls Junior Challenge Match, taking place at Harbor Club, August 7-8.
Reigning Georgia Girls Champion Jessica Haigwood of Roswell posted the biggest win of the round with a 6-and-5 victory over Chesley Couch of Ware Shoals, earning all three points. Also sweeping their matches were Emily Kurey of Alpharetta and Rinko Mitsunaga of Roswell. Kurey topped the South Carolina Girls’ Champion, Lauren Dunbar of Columbia, by a 4-and-3 margin. Mitsunaga won by the same tally over Kristi Goodman of Easley.
In the closest match of the day, McKenzie Talbert of North Augusta posted South Carolina’s only two points with a 1-up win over Georgia’s Rachel Dai of Suwanee. Talbert was 5-up at the turn, but Dai rallied in the home stretch, winning No. 15 with a birdie and 16 with an eagle to take the back nine point.
The two teams are competing using the Nassau format, which awards one point to the winner of each nine and one point to the overall match winner. Half-points are awarded for matches that are all square after each nine and overall.
The second and final round of the Georgia-South Carolina Girls Junior Challenge Match takes place Sunday, with the first match teeing off at 8:00 a.m. The two champions, Haigwood and Dunbar, will face each other in the 8:24 match.
As in the first round, another 12 points will be up for grabs. Georgia needs 2 1/2 points to claim the overall victory. In the fifth year of this competition, the series is tied 2-2.
Teams are composed of the top four finishers from each state’s 2010 Girls Championship, provided they are at least13 years old. Any necessary player substitutions follow the order of finish. Kurey and Mitsunaga tied for runner-up honors while Dai placed fourth at the Georgia Girls Championship, which took place June 21-23 at Capital City Club-Brookhaven Coursre in Atlanta.
