DGCC takes sixth in state

Dalton Golf and Country Club tumbled in the ranks after a strong first-round performance, but hung on for a top-10 finish Sunday in the Georgia Team Championship at The Georgia Club in Statham.

The DGCC contention of David Noll Jr., Mike Nance, Matt Oxford and Greg Brock opened with a 9-under 135 in four-ball play Saturday, just one stroke behind leader Champions Retreat Golf Club of Augusta. But they shot a 226 in the final round, when the best three of four scores were taken for the team total, finishing at 361 and in sixth place, one stroke off two teams tied for fourth — The Club at River Forest and Rivermont Golf and Country Club.

Noll (72), Nance (75) and Oxford (79) supplied the second-round scores, with Brock turning in an 80. The course played to 6,896 yards and a par 72.

Cartersville Country Club won the title for the first time in the 19th edition of the Georgia State Golf Association event, firing a 143-211 — 354 that was four stroke ahead of runner-up St. Ives Country Club, which took second for the second straight year. Hamilton Mill Golf Club was third at 359.
