Noll off to good start in match play tourney

JOHNS CREEK — Dalton’s David Noll Jr. fired a 4-under-par 66 in the qualifying round of the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship to earn medalist honors and claim the top-seed in match play.

Noll, who has won this Georgia State Golf Association event three times in the past six years, leads a group of 31 other players at Rivermont Golf and Country Club who qualified for match play, which begins this morning.

Noll, the reigning Georgia Amateur champion, was 3-under on the front nine and finished the day with six birdies and a bogey to give him the 66 score.  He finished one stroke ahead of two players, Matthew Hayes of Marietta and Bill Leonard of Kennesaw, at 3-under-par 67.  Leonard was the runner-up at this year’s Georgia Senior Championship.

Anders Albertson of Woodstock beat Noll in the final match last year to win the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship, 5 and 4.  He is not competing this week.
