With a 6-under-par 66 highlighted by a pair of eagles, Duluth’s Andy Shim was able to make sure he had no company atop the leaderboard after Monday’s opening round at the Georgia Junior Championship.
But Chatsworth’s Colby Hipp is part of the group ready to give chase when the Georgia State Golf Association tournament resumes today at Doublegate Country Club in Albany.
Hipp offset a pair of bogeys with three birdies to card a 71, and he was a shot behind Macon’s Seth Sanders and Marietta’s Adam Wright. Sanders and Wright share second behind Shim, who advanced to match play last summer at the U.S. Junior Amateur.
A rising senior at North Murray High, Hipp helped lead the Mountaineers to the Region 7-2A title and their first trip to state this spring in just their third season; he also won the 2011 junior club championship at Dalton Golf and Country Club.
He’s tied with six others for fourth place entering today’s crucial second round — the 54-hole event will be cut to the low 70 and ties after today.
Hipp shot 79-84 last summer at Augusta Country Club and was not around for the final day of action.
The first round proved tougher for other local golfers in the 142-player field.
Dalton’s Patrick Sims was tied for 81st after opening with a 79, ahead of Rocky Face’s Tucker Snipes (82, tied for 109th) and Ethan Hayes (85, tied for 130th), Chatsworth’s Christoph Kazmeirski (86, tied for 132nd) and Cohutta’s Silas Ledford (86, tied for 132nd).
