Noll will represent GSGA in competition

MARIETTA — The Georgia State Golf Association has announced the 16-member amateur team that will participate in the 38th Billy Peters Cup Matches, set for Oct. 16-17 at Capital City Club-Crabapple in Woodstock.

This biennial event is a team match-play competition pitting amateurs representing the GSGA against a team of professionals from the Georgia Section PGA. The GSGA team is made up of the state’s top amateur golfers, including four seniors, from the past two years as determined by the association’s Championship Committee. The format of the event is one round of four-ball matches and one round of singles matches.

Reigning GSGA Men’s Player of the Year and Georgia Amateur champion David Noll Jr. of Dalton headlines the GSGA team and is appearing on the team for the fifth consecutive time. Noll has won multiple GSGA tournaments and has been named GSGA Men’s Player of the Year six times (2003, ’05, ’07, ’08, ’09, ’10) and received the 2008 Tommy Barnes Award, which signifies GSGA’s Overall Player of the Year.

Chris Hall of Kennesaw, along with Noll, are the players with the most experience in Billy Peters Cup Matches, as each is set to compete in his fifth biennial competition. In his past three competitions (2005, ’07, ’09), Hall owns a 5-1 record in matches played, and Noll is 6-1-1 in his past four (2003, ’05, ’07, ’09) appearances.

The reigning Georgia Mid-Amateur champion, Mark Strickland of Woodstock, and 2004 Georgia Mid-Amateur champion, Doug Hanzel of Savannah, is each making his fourth appearance in the Billy Peters Cup Matches after previously competing in the 2005, 2007 and 2009 matches.

Two-time defending Georgia Public Links champion Billy Mitchell of Roswell and Dave Womack of McDonough, also a two-time Public Links champion (2003, ’05), will be making their third trip to the Billy Peters Cup Matches. Adam Thomas of Baxley, winner of the 1995 Georgia Amateur Championship, will be making his second appearance (2007, ’11).

Seven players will be making their Billy Peters Cup debut as Chris Chuck of Roswell, Jimmy Jackson of Macon, Christian Raynor of Kennesaw, Matt Russell of Dunwoody, Michael Standard of McDonough, Mark Sweeney of Monroe and Scott Weeks of Savannah have been selected to represent the GSGA.

The four players representing the senior class include Jack Hall of Sea Island, Bill Leonard of Kennesaw, Hanzel and Jackson. Hall is making his fourth appearance (1999, ’03, ’05, ’11) on the Billy Peters Cup team and Leonard is making his third appearance (2005, ’07, ’11). Jackson won the Georgia Senior Championship earlier this year, and Leonard was runner-up of that event.

The Billy Peters Cup Matches, formerly known as the GSGA-GPGA Challenge Cup, had its name changed in 2007 to honor Peters’ contributions to the game. Peters, a former president of the Georgia State Golf Association and honorary vice president of the Georgia Section PGA, was inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame in 1993.

In 2009, the Georgia Section PGA team won nine of 16 singles matches in the final round to close in on their five-point deficit, but the Georgia State Golf Association amateurs, needing just six points to win their fourth-straight title in the 37th Billy Peters Cup Matches, pocketed five singles matches and halved two more to edge the professionals, 13 1/2-10 1/2, at Capital City Club’s Crabapple Course in Woodstock.
