Noll eliminated at match play event

JOHNS CREEK — The quarterfinals are set after eight players made it through the rounds of 32 and 16 to advance Friday at the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship at Rivermont Golf and Country Club.

In the first match in the round of 32 at the Georgia State Golf Association event, top-seeded David Noll Jr. of Dalton lost in 21 holes to Chad Zorn of Lyons. In his round of 16 match, Zorn fell to DeWitt Weaver III of Suwanee, 4 and 2. Weaver will face Billy Mitchell of Roswell in the quarterfinals after Mitchell defeated Michael Morris of Marietta, 8 and 7, in the round of 32 and Jack Hall of Sea Island, 23 holes, in the round of 16. Weaver defeated Justin Johnson of Canton, 22 holes, in his opening-round match.

The second quarterfinal match will see Michael Morrison of Roswell take on Fred Rescigno Jr. of Suwanee. Morrison defeated Michael Standard of McDonough, 1 up, in the round of 32 and Bob Royak of Alpharetta, 6 and 4, in the round of 16. Rescigno advanced with wins over Mark Benefield of Duluth, 5 and 4, and Michael Toler of Marietta, 2 up.

Brad Jones of Augusta will face off against Dave Poteet of Suwanee in the third quarterfinals match. Jones beat Chris Minkley of Kennesaw, 4 and 2, in the round of 32 and won off a forfeit to two-seed Bill Leonard of Kennesaw in the round of 16. Poteet qualified for the quarterfinals by defeating Blake Burnette of Atlanta in his first match of the day, 3 and 2, and then beat Zachary Walters of Chamblee, 20 holes, in the round of 16.

The final quarterfinals match will see Brandon Nelson of Roswell take on Mike Cromer of Peachtree Corners. Nelson reached the ‘elite eight’ with wins over a pair from Marietta, Mel Mendenhall, 2 and 1, and Matthew Hayes, 2 up. Cromer beat Chris Hall of Kennesaw, 1 up, in the round of 32 and Terry Rush of Buford, 1 up, in the round of 16.

This marks the first time since the 2005 event that the top seed failed to make it past the round of 32. That year, Billy Mitchell of Roswell fell to John Powell of Dalton, 4 and 3. Mitchell, who is the 8th-seed this week at Rivermont Golf and Country Club, is the highest seed left after two rounds of action.

Quarterfinal matches begin at 8:10 a.m. today, with the semifinals to follow in the afternoon. The 18-hole championship match is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

Entries were open to male amateur golfers who are GSGA members. The stroke-play qualifying field consisted of the 120 entrants with the lowest USGA Handicap Indexes.  Notable former champions include Perry Adair (1916), Charlie Yates (1931), Tommy Barnes (1936), Dan Yates (1942), Gene Dahlbender (1946-47, 1957-59, 1962), Bobby Jones’ son, Robert T.
