Ellis big winner at race with a twist

Greg Ellis took home the Masters (40 and older) title Saturday morning at the Carpet Capital Running Club’s Tasty Donut Dash, and he also finished with the most laps and donuts, 12, out of all competitors.

More than 30 runners competed at the Dalton Boys and Girls Club in Dalton in the 30-minute race, with the object being to finish as many 1/3-mile laps as possible while eating a donut after each lap and retaining the donuts.

Ellis narrowly edged Stephen Lavelle, who finished 11 laps and donuts and won the male 18-39 age group. Hunter Painter, 11, won the male 11-17 age group with nine. Among females, Holly Kimsey won the Masters group with seven, Chantelle Kirk won the 18-39 group with nine and 9-year-old Kendra Goble won the 17-and-younger group with seven.

Before the main race, there was a 10-minute Mini Donut Dash for children 10 years and younger. The boys winner was Henry Bethel, 9, and the girls winner was Evely Martinez, 6.

There were other non-competitive awards from the event: Ellis won “Fastest Eater,” Marisol Martinez won “Messiest Eater,” Jonathan Rose won “Most Creative” for saying the most creative things each time he finished a lap and ate a donut and Jonathon Lavelle won “First to Lose Their Donuts” for being the first and only competitor to not keep down his donuts during the race.

Also, Lester Gaylon won “I’m Just Here for the Donuts,” Matt Smith won “Hole in One” for eating a donut in a single bite, Heather Powell of Tasty Daylight Donuts won “Most Enthusiastic Volunteer” and the three Dalton police officers who participated — Chris Zimmerman, Patrick Lee and Matthew Dykes — won the “Public Service Organization Bravery” award.
