Oct. 8
• A meeting regarding school choice will be held Oct. 8 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Unity Baptist Church in Dalton. Outreach coordinators from the Center for an Educated Georgia will discuss the movement in Georgia and how people can get involved. The church is at 1008 Burleyson Road.
Oct. 10
• A work day will be held Oct. 10 from 8 to 11 a.m. at Dunegan Cemetery in Rocky Face. Biscuits and juice will be provided for workers. • The first annual Downtown Dalton Wine and Dine Festival will be held Oct. 10 from 4 to 8 p.m. on the top floor of the parking garage on King Street. The event celebrates international wines and local culinary arts. Highlights include more than 25 international and regional wineries, culinary artistry from local restaurants and live music. Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 at the door. Tickets are available at www.downtowndalton.com or participating local downtown merchants.
Oct. 12
• The Lesche Woman’s Club will have the first meeting of its 120th year Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in the chapel of the First Baptist Church of Dalton. Lesche is a nonsectarian and non-political literary club for women. Eight meetings are held during the year for mutual improvement, entertainment and cultivation of the amenities of social life. Judy Schwenn and Joanne Lewis are chairs for October and will introduce this year’s theme, “Humor Around Us.” For more information, call president Marilyn Ottinger at (706) 278-0018.

• The Carpet Capital Women’s Network (CCWN) will have its monthly luncheon meeting Oct. 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Western Sizzlin’ Steak House located on Legion Drive in Dalton. • Dalton Whitfield Murray Retired Educators Association will host an insurance information meeting Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. for retired educators who are state health benefit recipients and over 65 at the Dalton-Whitfield Senior Center. A representative of State Health will speak and answer questions. The Center is at 302 Cappes St., in Dalton.
Oct. 17
• The Murray County Cattlemen’s Association’s 19th annual 4-H/Future Farmers of America Cattle Show will be held Oct. 17 at the Murray County High School agriculture/education complex. A steer show will be held at 10 a.m. followed by a heifer show at noon. For more information, call (706) 264-2848.
Oct. 18
• The Murray County Senior Center will have a Sunday dinner fundraiser Oct. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plates are $5 and include chicken and dressing with gravy, green beans, corn, roll, cranberry sauce and homemade desserts. Eat-in or carryout. The Center is located on G.I. Maddox Parkway in Chatsworth.
Oct. 22
• The League of Women Voters picnic and auction will be held Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Dalton-Whitfield Senior Center. Invited guests are candidates for the Ninth District U.S. Congress, Dalton City Council, Dalton School Board and others to be on the November ballot. Danny Sane will be the auctioneer of donated items such as restaurant gift cards, donated baked goods and more. The public is invited. Oct. 23-24

• United Way of Northwest Georgia and Mohawk Industries will hold Make A Difference Day Oct. 23-24 with six volunteer projects taking place. The Conasauga River Clean-Up will also be held Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. to noon. More than 600 volunteers are needed. Register at www.ourunitedway.org.

• Junior Achievement will host its first “5K for JA” with a free fun run Oct. 31. The fun run begins at 8 a.m. followed by the 5K at 9. The cost for the 5K run is $15 for adults, $10 for children 14 and under and $25 for families. T-shirts will be provided for all paid participants who register before Oct. 16.
