On Tuesday, Sept. 13, the Northwest Georgia Regional Library Davison Lecture Series presents author, chef and traveler Mark Leslie, “A Personal ‘Taste’ of Italy From Inside an Italian Family’s Home” at the Dalton-Whitfield Public Library.
The series was named in memory of former Dalton resident Bob Davison. The series is designed to provide residents with quality local and regional authors and lecturers as well as offer an opportunity for an evening of pure enjoyment.
Mark Leslie, a self-proclaimed “foodie” who loves to cook for anyone with an appetite, works across the country in professional theatre as a stage manager. Every year he vacations in Italy and lives to eat his way through every plate of pasta and cone of gelato placed before him. He shares those Italian experiences on his popular blog at www.beyondthepasta.com. A Chicago-area native, Leslie has lived in Alabama for more than 23 years and celebrates that he started life eating farina, progressed to grits and finally arrived at polenta.
In his TV, radio and podcast appearances, cooking school classes and book club cooking demonstrations, Leslie reveals the ease and simplicity of the Italian cuisine while giving it a personal ‘taste’ of Italy from inside an Italian family’s home. Centered around Leslie’s notion of “Bring your family to the table and change a life one meal at a time,” organizers say his use of fresh and local ingredients will encourage attendees to return to the kitchen and share his passion with the people they care about most.
His book, “Beyond the Pasta,” is part cookbook, part travelogue and part autobiography. It has been featured and reviewed by many online food and Italian-themed blogs, garnering such titles as “Five Summer Reads for Food Lovers” by Mother News Network, “Books to Devour” by Food Republic, “Best Blogs to Cookbooks” by The Daily Meal and “May the Pasta be With You, Y’all” by Foodimentary.
Upon its release, Apple named Leslie’s “Beyond the Pasta” application available on iTunes’ “New and Noteworthy.” The application features more than 100 videos and photos.
A reception in honor of Leslie begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by the program at 6:45. The reception is sponsored by the Friends of the Dalton-Whitfield Public Library. The program is presented free of charge by the library. A book signing follows.
The library is at 310 Cappes St. For more information, call (706) 876-1377.
