40,000 gather for the annual Boy Scout National Jamboree in Virginia

DALTON — Submitted by Boy Scouts Troop 1923

On July 26 at 6 a.m., 7,000 acres of open fields at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia were transformed into the seventh largest city in the state — complete with its own services such as police, fire, hospitals, food services and sanitation.

More than 40,000 Boy Scouts and adult leaders will set up camp for 10 days to enjoy the 2010 National Jamboree. The event happens every four years and this year is a celebration of the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouts of America. Troop 1923 of the Northwest Georgia Council will be a part of it.

The troop consists of 36 boys and four teachers from all across the council, which includes Dalton, Chatsworth, Rome, Calhoun, Cartersville and Adairsville. Nine boys and one leader hail from Dalton. Tim McIntosh is the Scoutmaster of the troop. He is normally Scoutmaster of Troop 98 at First Christian Church, where he serves as minister.

Included in the troop are Jacob Kinney and Michael Koop of Troop 75 sponsored by the VFW, John Whitfield of Troop 96 sponsored by Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, Triston Findley, Taylor Harper, Nicholas Moser, Noah Witt and Kyle Witt of Troop 98 sponsored by First Christian Church and Chandler Tate of Troop 111 sponsored by First Baptist Church.

The scouts will participate in archery, mountain man crafts, pioneering, scuba diving, patch trading, mountain boarding, sailing and every merit badge program the Boy Scouts has.
