Bowing in the presence of greatness

By Gary Mimbs

A lot was made recently in the media about President Obama committing a political error by bowing to a foreign king. The uproar seemed to be that the president of the United States is recognized as the strongest leader in the world so he should not bow to anyone, especially the leader of another nation.

We recognize bowing to someone as a sign of respect. But it is also seen as a sign of submission. In the Bible days to bow to someone meant that you were surrendering to them and willing to accept whatever they might do to you. When you bowed you were not sure if the person would cut off your head or accept your gesture of honor.

The Bible tells us in Romans 14:11 that “One day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess to God and we will give an account of ourselves to God.” That means that every president, every king, every ruler, every billionaire, every person every born will one day bow to God. It also means that every person, regardless of their wealth, power or position will confess that God is the most powerful ruler there is and they are in subjection to His power and under His authority.

Many proud, arrogant people who show no respect or honor to anyone will someday find themselves honoring God with their position of respect (bowing) and with their lips. It will be an overwhelming thing to be a position to do this when you don’t want to.

There is a big choice involved in this matter. A person can submit to God today and surrender their life to Him and serve Him willingly. This brings great joy and peace in knowing that you have made peace with the most powerful force in the universe. You are now on God’s side. You are not His enemy but now in His family.

The other option is to reject God and His offer of His love and mercy. But you will have to face the wrath and punishment that He has stored up for those who reject Him. Then, from the pits of Hell one day, those who reject His love, will bow their knee and confess with their lips that God is truly more powerful than they are. They will have to give an account of how they rejected His love and refused to surrender while here on earth. They will finally show Him the respect that is due to Him but it will be too late.

I want to enjoy this life here and then reap the benefits of heaven for all eternity. So I willingly bow myself in subject to God here and now. I gladly acknowledge Him as my Savior, Lord and King. Won’t you honor Him with your life now instead of having to bow to Him and confess after it is too late?
