Southeastern 7-on-7: Volunteers needed as tournament expands

When The Daily Citizen’s Southeastern 7-on-7 Championship returns to Dalton this summer, it will bring more high school football teams from more states for an even bigger and better competition than last year’s debut event.

With that will come even more opportunity for the event to showcase the Carpet Capital — and a greater need for volunteers to make that possible.

“Last year’s tournament was a huge success as 20 teams from five different states met to compete for our inaugural seven-on-seven event,” said Gary Jones, advertising director for The Daily Citizen. “This year we are making a huge leap by bringing in 32 teams from 11 states.”

The seven-on-seven event will be held July 14-15 at Dalton Parks and Recreation Department facilities, but the activities will go beyond the on-field competition that highlights the passing game and gives high school football teams a way to test themselves in the offseason.

“In addition to the tournament we will be holding a free combine and new for this year, a lineman camp,” Jones said. “As the tournament has grown, so have our staffing needs. We will have more than a thousand participants in our events for that weekend, and we will need help from the community to adequately handle our visitors. We are asking for volunteers to do everything from run scoreboards to direct traffic to serve as an assigned host for a team.

“This is an opportunity to show people from everywhere how special of a place Dalton truly is,” Jones said.

Last year, two Alabama teams squared off for the inaugural title as Madison’s Bob Jones beat Fort Payne, 42-6. Bob Jones coach Kevin Rose summed up what seven-on-seven competition is all about in his comments to The Daily Citizen after the championship.

“It’s a great opportunity to improve our passing offense and defense in a very competitive environment,” Rose said. “Our guys aren’t going to play that hard against each other, but put them in this environment against other quality teams, and you get to see them go to another level, and that was very encouraging.”
