The Softball Players Association returns to Dalton starting today with two men’s senior softball championships as teams from across the country compete in the SPA World Series.
Dalton residents have become familiar with SPA players patronizing businesses in July and September the past four years, but this year there is a new twist as the SPA Women’s Senior World Series will be held in Dalton for the first time.
All games will be held at Heritage Point Park. Today through Sunday and Sept. 13 to 15 will feature the senior men’s tournaments, while Sept. 20 to 22 will showcase the senior women.
In addition to bringing the tournaments to Dalton, SPA Executive Director Ridge Hooks said, “It’s about giving back to the community.” SPA will be providing $1000 to Dalton State College for the Police & Fire Scholarship, $1000 to the Wounded Warrior Project and $1000 to the local Susan G Komen for the Cure breast cancer organization.
You will also notice when you come out to Heritage Point that SPA honors our military heroes with a color guard ceremony and prominent flag displays honoring our military service men and women.
The four tournaments, including one held in July, will generate more than $2 million dollars in combined economic impact for the Dalton community.
“It’s a great time of the year when SPA comes to town,” said Brett Huske, executive director of the Dalton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The competition, the fund raising and the spark in our community is a blessing particularly in the month of September.”
