This doesn’t mean anything for us, since we have to work leading up to the events, but it means you, the fans, get five full days to rest your voices before unleashing its fury.
Friday is all football as local teams play their last regular season games, and three play important matchups that either could, or will, determine if they will make the state playoffs.
On Saturday in Carrollton, seven cross country teams will run in GHSA state meets for a chance to bring home state gold.
On the football field, Christian Heritage will face King’s Ridge Christian, and the Lions desperately need a win Friday against their Sub-region 6B-A pairing to earn power-rating points and inch closer to the top 16 and a Class A state playoff berth.
For Dalton and Northwest Whitfield, it is more cut and dry. The Bruins host Gilmer and the Cats welcome Pickens with the winners earning Region 7-4A’s third and fourth playoff spots.
Southeast Whitfield faces Cedartown at home in a non-meaningful region crossover game which is a rematch of a game from earlier this year. Cedartown and the state’s leading rusher Nick Chubb won the first meeting 47-27 in Cedartown.
In Region 5-3A, both North Murray and Coahulla Creek are eliminated from playoff contention but each have a season finalé. North Murray hosts Gordon Central, and Coahulla Creek welcomes Adairsville. Winless Murray County welcomes Coosa to Chatsworth in Region 7-2A play.
All games begin at 7:30 p.m.
n Two local schools had both the boys and girls teams make the top four in each region meet to qualify for the state cross country meets on Saturday in Carrollton, while three additional teams did the same.
Dalton’s boys, the Region 7-4A champs, and Northwest’s boys will run at 8:15 a.m., while the Lady Bruins follow with a 9:15 a.m. start. Dalton’s Bekah Houston finished in the top six in the region meet and will compete individually at state with Northwest’s girls.
Murray County’s boys squad finished in the top four of Region 7-2A and will run at 10 a.m. in the Class 2A meet.
Coahulla Creek’s boys will run with North Murray’s boys at 2:30 p.m. in the Class 3A meet, with the Mountaineers’ Isaac Pacheco leading the way after winning an individual Region 5-3A title.
The Lady Colts also qualified for state and will run at 3:15 p.m.
n With the weather offering a reminder that the winter season is coming, it’s never too early to buy Christmas presents.
It’s also never too early for athletic directors and coaches at all local middle schools and high schools to send in their schedules and rosters for winter sports (basketball, wrestling and swimming and diving) as soon as they’re finalized so we can begin putting together the area prep schedule for our readers.
