Volunteers needed

• The Daily Citizen is seeking volunteers to help with its annual Southeastern 7-on-7 Championship on July 14 to 15 in Dalton. This high school football tournament will feature 32 teams from 11 states competing for the title, and the weekend’s activities will also include a camp for linemen and a free combine, with more than 1,000 athletes expected to participate. This event is a great chance to showcase Dalton, but volunteers are needed in several capacities to help make it happen. DPRD pool

• The Dalton Parks and Recreation Department pool, located at 904 Civic Drive, is open for the summer. The pool will be open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday until Aug. 5. Admission is $2 per person, and children 10 and younger must be accompanied by someone 16 or older. A proper bathing suit is required and no coolers are allowed. Pool rentals are $125 for up to 40 people for two hours. For information, call (706) 278-5404.



Youth fishing

• The Dalton Parks and Recreation Department will host a fishing rodeo for ages 3 to 15 from 7 to 11 a.m. on June 2 at Al Rollins Park as part of National Fishing Day. The “No Fishing” signs will be removed at that time, and from then until the signs go back up in the fall, fishing will be open at the pond. No license is required to fish on this date, but after June 2 a current fishing license is required to fish at all ponds owned by DPRD. Cycling conference

• Bike! Walk! NWGA’s “Cycling and walking: Roads to a Better Quality of Life” is scheduled for June 12 at the Calhoun Depot, located at 109 King St. This workshop will offer the chance to learn firsthand how economic development and quality of life is impacted by cycling and walking facilities and how to receive funding for these facilities from experts in the field. Local, regional and national speakers will share their stories and practices. Cost is $10 if eating Chick-fil-A box lunch. For information, write to julie@cycletherapy.us.



College events

• The 2012 Georgia Tech Coaches Caravan will visit The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 29. Yellow Jackets coach Paul Johnson, men’s basketball coach Brian Gregory, women’s basketball coach MaChelle Joseph, athletic director Dan Radakovich and broadcaster Wes Durham are all scheduled to attend. There is no charge for this event, for which light snacks will be served and a cash bar will be available, but fans must register at ramblinwreck.com/caravan. Questions? Instruction

• SwimAmerica swimming lessons are scheduled for every two weeks now and throughout the summer. Each session is for 30 minutes per day (Monday to Friday) for two weeks, a total of 10 lessons. Classes will be held at 4, 4:30, 5 and 7:30 p.m. at Dalton High. For information, call (706) 275-0077 or visit daltonswimming.org.

• The Dalton Parks and Recreation Department will offer three two-week sessions of swimming lessons this summer. Dates are June 4 to 15, June 18 to 29 and July 9 to 20; each lesson lasts 45 minutes, and start times are 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon, with time slot dependent on level of experience. Lessons are available for those age 4 and older, from beginners to advanced swimmers. Cost is $40 per person. For more information, call (706) 278-5404.

• Coahulla Creek’s Colts Mini Cheer Camp for cheerleaders entering kindergarten through sixth grade is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to noon on May 29-31 at the high school. Cost is $60 and includes a T-shirt, and funds raised will support Coahulla Creek cheerleading. Participants will have the opportunity to cheer before a Colts home game next season. • Grindhouse Wrestling club, located at 111 Jones Road in Calhoun, will host several upcoming camps: Youth Beginner Camp (June 4 to 6, ages 6 to 13); Takedown Grind Camp featuring Witt Durden, a four-time Georgia High School Association state champion at Dublin High who went on to earn NCAA All-American honors at Oklahoma (June 11 to 13, ages 9 to 18, no beginners); Youth Intensive Camp featuring Steve Hamilton, four-time NCAA All-American at Iowa State (June 25 to 27, ages 8 to 13, no beginners); Grindhouse Technique Camp, featuring Chris Fleeger, Josh Henson, Heath Eslinger and Jake Brumbelow (July 9 to 12, ages 7 to 18); Takedown Grind Camp, featuring Hamilton (July 23 to 25, ages 9 to 18, no beginners). All camps are limited to 30 wrestlers to allow for more individual attention and intense drill sessions. Registration is available at grindhousewrestling.com.

• Dalton High’s Lady Cats Basketball camp for girls in pre-K through eighth grade is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to noon on May 29 to June 1 at the school’s gym. Cost is $65. For information contact Jeff McKinney at jeff.mckinney@dalton.k12.ga.us.

• Nob North Golf Course in Cohutta will host its annual junior clinic for boys and girls ages 7-17 from 9 a.m. to noon on June 4 to 6. • The Northwest Bruins Baseball Summer Clinic for boys entering the second through ninth grade is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on June 4 to 6 at Richard S. Chumley Field at the high school in Tunnel Hill. Cost is $40 and includes a T-shirt. Participants should wear baseball shoes and bring a glove; you can bring your own bat and helmet if you like. • Dalton Middle’s youth baseball camp for ages 5-12 is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon from June 4 to 6 at Heritage Point Park in Dalton. Instruction in pitching, hitting, fielding and throwing will be provided by Cougars coaches. Cost is $50 and includes a camp T-shirt. • The Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins Camp of Champions is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on June 4 to 7 at the high school in Tunnel Hill. This basketball camp is open to any girl entering kindergarten through the ninth grade. Cost is $50, and each participant will receive a T-shirt and basketball. Questions? • The Bagley Braves Individual Basketball Camp is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 11 to 14. Cost is $50 and includes lunch.

• North Murray’s Lady Mountaineer Basketball Camp for girls ages 5 to 14 is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to noon on June 11 to 14 at the high school in Chatsworth. Cost is $50 and includes lunch. Pre-register by calling Keith Robinette at (706) 618-2735.

• The Dalton Parks and Recreation Department will host an equestrian camp from June 11 to 15 at the Mystery Dog Ranch in Ringgold. Campers will meet at 8:15 a.m. each day at the DPRD recreation center, and the van will leave at 8:30. Camp will end each day at 4:30 p.m. The week will be spent learning basic horsemanship, and participants will be assigned their own horses to take care of and groom. Activities will include riding instruction, swimming, crafts and trail rides. Campers must provide their own lunch (a cooler will be available for drinks) and should bring a refillable water bottle, but an afternoon snack will be provided. Campers should wear hard-soled shoes and bring pants for riding, as well as a swimsuit and sunscreen. Cost is $250, and a non-refundable $100 deposit is due when registering. • The Northwest Bruin Basketball Camp for boys in kindergarten through ninth grade is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon on June 25 to 28 at the high school in Tunnel Hill. Camp will cover fundamentals and include games and competitions; instruction will be provided by Bruins basketball staff and current and former players. Cost is $50 (family discount of $5 per player) and includes a T-shirt. • The Big Harry Run, a 5K cross country run/walk, is scheduled for 6 p.m. on May 31. The course starts and finishes at Lakeshore Park, but also runs through Al Rollins Park. • Cross Plains Community Partners will hold their annual Grizzly Trail Run on June 9 at Raisin Woods Bike Trail. Registration begins at 7 a.m., and the 5K starts at 8. • The 21st annual Northwest Georgia FCA Golf Classic is scheduled for June 18 at Dalton Golf and Country Club. There will be morning and afternoon start times. The winning four-person team earns a slot to play in the FCA National Tournament on Nov. 16 to 18 at TPC Sawgrass course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
