Volunteers needed
• The Daily Citizen is seeking volunteers to help with its annual Southeastern 7-on-7 Championship, set for July 14-15 in Dalton. This high school football tournament will feature 32 teams from 11 states competing for the title, and will also include a camp for linemen and a free combine, with more than 1,000 athletes expected to participate in the activities. This event is a great chance to showcase Dalton, but volunteers are needed in several capacities to help make it happen. College events
• A UGA Day is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. on April 18 at The Forum Civic Center in Rome. Georgia football coach Mark Richt and other special guests are scheduled to attend the event, which will be hosted by Chuck Dowdle. Participants can get the inside scoop on the Bulldogs’ upcoming seasons, hear the latest news from the university and learn more about how to get involved with other area alumni. Cost is $15 per person with children 12 and younger admitted free. Admission includes appetizers, and a cash bar will also be available. For information, write to fbeusse@uga.edu.
• The 2012 Georgia Tech Coaches Caravan will visit The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face from 6-8 p.m. on May 29. Yellow Jackets coach Paul Johnson, men’s basketball coach Brian Gregory and women’s basketball coach MaChelle Joseph, athletic director Dan Radakovich and broadcaster Wes Durham are all scheduled to attend. There is no charge for this event, for which light snacks will be served and a cash bar will be available, but fans must register at ramblinwreck.com/caravan. Questions? Alumni football

• “Clash for a Cause,” a full-contact high school football alumni game between Dalton and Ringgold, is scheduled for April 28 at Don Patterson Stadium. Tickets are $5 and are on sale at the high schools and at Oakwood Cafe in Dalton.
Instruction
• SwimAmerica swimming lessons are scheduled for every two weeks now and throughout the summer. Each session is for 30 minutes per day (Monday-Friday) for two weeks, or 10 lessons. • Northwest Whitfield’s boys basketball program will host a Mandatory Basketball Skills Camp for players in second through ninth grades from 2-5 p.m. on April 29 at the high school’s gym in Tunnel Hill. • Northwest Whitfield’s softball program will host an offensive clinic for all ages from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 18 at the school’s field. Cost is $50, and pre-registration is required. Featured instructor will be Lee Dobbins, assistant coach, hitting instructor and recruiting coordinator for Emory University in Atlanta. The Northwest coaching staff will serve as assistant instructors. Topics will include offensive philosophy, swing breakdown, rotational vs. linear hitting, power game vs. base-to-base game, hitting circuit and training, drills and tips, and much more. Competitions
• Gordon Hospital Foundation’s sixth annual round-robin doubles tennis tournament is scheduled for April 22-30 at the City of Calhoun Tennis Complex. Event is open to juniors, women and men, with beginner, intermediate and advanced divisions. Cost is $50 per adult and $25 per junior; for $10, adults can participate in a second division. Entry fee includes a T-shirt, and funds raised will go toward the new Radiation Therapy Center currently under construction at the hospital. • Gordon Hospital Foundation’s Run for Your Life Road Race, a 5K for runners and walkers, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on April 26 at the hospital in Calhoun. Entry fees are $15 for students; for others, cost is $25 through April 25 and $30 on race day. Registration is available at active.com, and entry forms are also available at gordonhospital.com or at the hospital’s main information desk. Race-day registration begins at 5 p.m. Participants can park at Gordon Central High School, and a shuttle service will run every 15 minutes to the hospital. Awards will be given to the top overall male and female finishers, as well as the top three in each age group. All participants will receive a goody bag and tech shirt. • The Turf Town Tournament for youth baseball teams is scheduled for April 27-28 at Dug Gap Park in Dalton. Proceeds will benefit Special Olympics Georgia. Age groups for the tournament are 8-and-under, 10U and 12U. Pool play is scheduled for the first day, with single-elimination play the second day. Winning team from each age group will receive a team trophy and T-shirts. Entry fee is $150 per team, with a three-game guarantee. • The Terry Wood Memorial Doubles Championships to benefit the American Heart Association are scheduled for April 27-29 at Lakeshore Park in Dalton. Entry fee for men’s and women’s doubles (18 and older) is $50 per team; 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 levels will be available. Entry fee for advanced junior singles division is $20. • A two-person golf tournament is scheduled for 1 p.m. on May 5 at Nob North in Cohutta. This event is sponsored by Robin’s Blue Angels and will raise funds for Murray County Relay for Life. Entry fee is $65 per person through April 27 and $75 thereafter. Prizes will be awarded to first- and second-place teams, based on participation, with additional prizes for longest drive and closest to pin; all participants will receive lunch. • The Zombie Stomp obstacle and mud run is scheduled for May 12 at the Silver Shoe Ranch in Dalton. Activities will include a one-mile course for kids, 5K course, 10K course, zombie paintball range and other games. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Georgia chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. All participants will receive a medal and T-shirt; trophies will be awarded to the top three women, men, teenage and youth participants. • The 37th annual Roman Open charity golf tournament is scheduled for May 14 at Dalton Golf and Country Club. The event, which benefits numerous non-profit agencies and provides scholarships for Dalton State College, will have morning and afternoon flights for four-person teams. Entry fee is $175 per person. Contests will include a hole-in-one challenge, putting competition and closest to the pin, and there will also be a silent auction at the event. Call (706) 278-0672 by May 5 to register.
• The Carpet Capital Running Club’s Tasty Donut Dash is scheduled for May 26 at the Boys and Girls Club at 1013 Underwood St. in Dalton. The Mini Donut Dash for ages 10 and younger will start at 9 a.m. Participants will be given 10 minutes to alternate eating a donut hole and running a lap as many times as possible. The Tasty Donut Dash for ages 11 and older will start at 9:30 a.m. Awards will be given to the top male and female in three classifications (youth, adult and Masters) who complete the most laps while retaining their donuts. Additional awards and door prizes will also be given out after the race. Entry fee is $10 through May 12, and $15 thereafter. Clubs, teams, leagues
• Registration is open through June 15 for the Dalton Dolphins summer swimming and diving team. Cost is $185 and covers Chattanooga Area Swim League registration, team registration, insurance, monthly coaching fee, T-shirt and team swim cap. Practices will begin at 5:30 p.m. on April 30 at Dalton High, and registration will be available at any weekday afternoon practice at the school.
