Thursday night’s preseason scrimmage between Northwest Whitfield and Dalton will be more than just an evening of exciting high school football between the intracounty rivals.
The game, which kicks off at 7 p.m. at Harmon Field, will also be used to promote breast cancer awareness and help raise funds for that cause.
The Daily Citizen is partnering with both schools to support Susan G. Komen For the Cure, which supports research, awareness and health services for breast cancer.
The schools will donate a portion of ticket sales to the cause and The Daily Citizen will match their contributions. In addition, buckets will be passed during the game to allow fans to make voluntary contributions, all of which will be donated to For the Cure, in addition to the contributions from the partnership.
In addition, Hamilton Diagnostics Center and North Georgia Radiology Group are partnering with the schools in the event and will provide breast cancer information at the game.
“We are very excited that these schools would take such an interest in breast cancer awareness,” said Dr. Paige Queen, radiologist for North Georgia Radiology Group, in a news release.
“It is a disease that touches everyone’s life at some point — whether it’s a wife, mother, sister or occasionally a man who gets diagnosed.”
During the game, cheerleaders for each team will throw out 60 pink “This is War!” (against breast cancer) footballs to fans in honor of those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer since the beginning of this year through the services of Hamilton Diagnostics Center and NGR Group. Each team will also be given four pink football jerseys to throw to fans during the game.
“It is our hope that many in the area will get excited about the idea behind this scrimmage game and come out, have fun and support the fight against breast cancer,” said Annette Daniel, spokesperson for Hamilton Diagnostics. “After all, this is war!”
